What is dental surgical crown lengthening?

Dental surgical crown lengthening is a process completed by an experienced dentist or periodontist to expose more a tooth by means of disposing of gum and, in a few cases, bone tissue. This technique is usually completed for one of the following reasons:

Aesthetic cosmetic concerns: Some people have what is usually referred to as a "gummy smile," wherein a lot gum tissue covers a massive portion of the tooth, making them appear shorter. Crown lengthening can be performed to show more of the teeth's crown, creating a greater balanced and visually appealing smile.

Restorative purposes: In instances where a tooth is fractured, decayed, or worn below the gumline, crown lengthening may be done to provide more space for a dental crown or restoration to be placed well. This allows the dentist to bond better to enamel or dentine tooth structure and ensures a secure fit for the final restoration.

The process usually entails the following steps:

Anesthesia: Local anesthesia is administered to numb the region, making sure that the patient is comfortable during the process and feels no pain during.

Incisions: The dentist or periodontist will make small incisions inside the gum tissue to get entry to the enamel's root and surrounding bone.

Gum and bone reshaping: Excess gum and bone tissue is carefully removed or contoured to reveal extra of the teeth's crown whilst keeping the best balance (this is normally measure and a possible CT scan taken).

Suturing: The gum tissue is repositioned and sutured again in area. The sutures are can be absorbable and will dissolve over time. Sometimes they are made of thin nylon and removed 7 days later.

Recovery after crown lengthening can take numerous weeks with some initial pain and swelling. It's vital to observe post-operative care commands, which may also consist of maintaining proper oral hygiene, fending off certain hard foods, and taking any prescribed medicines.

Crown lengthening is generally a safe and efficient procedure, but it must be carried out by way of a qualified dental expert which we have in abundance at TAHA Dental Excellence. It's essential to discuss the risks, benefits, costs, and expected consequences together with your dentist or periodontist before undergoing any treatment.
