ORAL CANCER - SEE YOUR DENTIST!

Yes the image is shocking... but it is the reality. This month I am really trying to highlight regular check ups and reviews. A lot of patients tend to attend for a course of treatment and then not return for a number of years until there is another issue. The problem is conditions like Cancer can develop with our symptoms or even you realising it is there growing.

Symptoms of mouth cancer

The symptoms of mouth cancer include:

  • mouth ulcers that are painful and do not heal within several weeks.

  • unexplained, continued lumps in the mouth or the neck that do not go away within 2-3 weeks.

  • unexplained loose teeth or sockets that do not heal after tooth removal.

  • unexplained, continued numbness or a strange feeling on the lip or tongue.

  • white or red or uneven patches on the lining of the mouth or tongue These can be early signs of cancer and may need biopsy.

  • changes in speech, such as a lisp or difficulties swallowing.

Please see a dentist if these symptoms do not get better within 2-3 weeks, particularly if you drink or smoke as this can increase your likelihood.
